MINOR RIVERS OF SUNDERLAND
Obviously the River Wear is the major riverine prescence in Sunderland, but there are smaller but no less important rivers. Some of them are tributories of the Wear, others discharge into the sea.
HENDON BURN
Rises in Blakeney Woods, discharges into the sea (or at least, the docks) after passing through Doxford Park, Silksworth Lakes and Backhouse Park.
Hendon's gentle flow
Whispers through Sunderland's heart
Nature's calming touch
Autumn leaves dance, fall
Hendon Burn adorns in gold
A symphony's end
Under starlit sky
Hendon's secrets softly shared
Moonlight's gentle song

BARNES BURN
Rises near Grindon Hill, discharges into the Wear at Gallies Gill, after passing through Barnes Park and Burn Park.
Beneath a gray sky,
Barnes Burn whispers, meanders,
Nature's gentle hymn.
Footsteps echo loud,
Over worn stones by the bank,
Whispers of the past.
Autumn leaves dance free,
Rustling by Barnes Burn's side,
Nature's vibrant show.
HYLTON DENE BURN
Rises in the Nissan factory complex, and passes close to Hylton Castle before it discharges into the Wear just west of the Northern Spire bridge.
Hylton's secret path,
Dene Burn whispers through the trees,
Nature's tranquil breath.
Castle stands in time,
Centuries of strength and grace,
Bold tales on stone walls.
Sunderland's treasure,
Hylton's historic embrace,
Legends forever.
THE BLACK WATER
Rises (probably) in the shadow of the Tunstall Hills and discharges into the sea at Ryhope Beach.
Black water whispers,
Ancient secrets, ghostly tales,
Ryhope's haunted past.
Misty apparitions,
Spectral echoes haunting deep,
Ryhope's blackened heart.
Ghostly whispers rise,
Lost souls yearn for peace at last,
Black water holds them.
