RED HOUSE
Sunderland
Situated at Monkwearmouth on the north bank of the Wear, a short walk from the National Glass Centre, this is another of those borderline cases, like the Apollo Pavilion at Peterlee - is it a sculpture or does it qualify as a folly ? It certainly seems to qualify as a sham ruin.
It represents the ground floor of a building, ruined and open to the elements, but still containing furniture, utensiles, even a coat hung up by the door - all carved from stone.
Created in 1995 by Colin Wilbourn and Karl Fisher, as part of a collection of sculptures along the north bank of the Wear, it is constructed out of soft red standstone taken from a disused part of the Queen Alexandra Bridge.
