THE SINGING STONE
Barnes Park, Sunderland
From ancient gravel,
Melodies on earth's own tongue,
Stone chorus echoes.
Whispering secrets,
The singing stone softly hums,
Nature's lullaby.
Moss-covered pebble,
Serenading silent woods,
Eternal ballad.
A tall monolith situated near the Durham Road gates. It has two large holes bored into it and a nearby information board tells us -
The Singing Stone
Take a deep breath and exhale slowly while humming.
Hum with lightly closed mouth and lips in different tone levels till you will find your own, individual tone.
As soon as you will meet this tone, the resonance will increase and you will feel the vibration of your own voice in your back, legs and down in your soles.
Repeat several times.
Every person has an individual resonance for his/her organs, the so-called tremor. Humming stimulates this tremor hugely.
In early times of human history, humming was probably practised even more than dance, song, drumming or playing the flute to intonate the whole organism.
Early evidence of this is the humming holes in caves on Malta and in medieval cathedrals of South France.

Aside from the fact that the above was probably snatched from its native language and forced into English by an evil Google Translate programme, humming actually turns out to be quite good fun - clean and cheap too - as is humming into the holes in the monolith designed for that purpose. You do get weird looks from passers-by though.
