BOURNMOOR STONES

A modern monolithic monument situated just off the A183 (Sunderland - Chester-le-Street), off the turn into the Lambton Estate, near where the garden centre used to be.
Not a stone circle, more of a deformed horseshoe shape, with the stones atop a landscaped bank. In the middle of the group someone thought a metal mast structure would look good... they were wrong...
...although an alternative point was made by Jamie Tubmen who, writing in this site's old guestbook said:
The "metal spike" to which you refer concerning the Bournmoor Stones is essential, because the structure is a sundial. It was not put there to "attractive". The shadow of the gnomen (the metal spike) moves around the stones and indicates the time.
A lack of gates or stiles indicates that public admission to the stones is not allowed, or at least not encouraged... which doesn't make its function as a sundial very useful, but there you go...
