SPIRIT OF PLACE
The Spirit Of Place project, which spawned this website, is a musical work-in-progress by Sunderland outsider music experimenteers Frankenstein Sound Lab, originating from some trials of a free computer programme called i2sm, which (to put it very simply) turns images into sounds. You feed in a photo, and the various colours are turned into musical notes. Find out more here - http://i2sm.numberware.net
General messing about for the fun of it slowly evolved into a serious project, the catalyst being the sounds produced by a photo of Man Haven Bay, on the South Tyneside coastline, which coalesced into a rather nice piece of modern classical/avante garde music.
From there it was but a short leap to wondering whether such music generated from images was actually an expression of the spirit of the place. And here we are...
In addition, ambient sound was recorded at locations and incorporated into the pieces. In some cases this is obvious (waves, birdsong), in others its just a background hum and probably not noticeable. But its in there somewhere, another aspect of the spirit of the place.
The project extended to making videos to accompany each piece of completed music - its acknowledged that the experimental nature of the music wont be to everyone's taste, but you may find it makes more sense in conjunction with the images.
And then... well, we had all these images and we knew the stories behind them and it seemed a shame to waste them, so why not make them available to the world ? So here we are, and here you are.
As stated, this is an ongoing project - both the album and this website. The album will be completed sooner (probably !) and will be made available for free via this website. In the meantime, here are a couple of completed pieces - enjoy.
PS - Frankenstein Sound Lab currently offer around 200 pieces of music for free listen/download at their Malice In Sunderland website - the sound of alternative Sunderland ! http://maliceinsunderland.weebly.com/
